Giveaway for Book Lovers

Giveaway for Book Lovers

Update: We have winners! Congrats to Alyssa R for winning Mansfield Park, Vanya for winning Garlic and Sapphires, and Shianne Kropf for winning Canterbury Tales.

The only thing more fun than finding a perfectly delicious book is forcing all your friends to read it as well. (Don’t ask my friends if I am annoying this way; I already know the answer.) Anyway, I think my friends’ “To-Read” lists are all quite long enough, so there’s nothing left to do but take to the World Wide Web and find strangers to read my books.

So, in that spirit, I’d like to give these books away to three deserving people. They are all lovely used volumes, and my relationship with them is as follows:

Mansfield Park:  This is oddly one of my favorite of Jane Austen’s books. The story drew me in much more than some of her more popular ones, and if you like Austen but haven’t tried this one, I’d recommend it. However, the movie is not so great. Fannie is always pouting and moping about corners, and it drives me a little nuts, but the book is much better, in my opinion.

Garlic and Sapphires: Oh boy, where do I start? I’m not sure but that this book is solely to blame for my obsession with food memoirs. It’s the story of Ruth Reichl who moved to NYC to be a food editor for the New York Times. However, she quickly discovered that restaurant owners were offering rewards to the servers who spotted her so they could give her the best service, so she had to get crafty. She created elaborate disguises complete with full-blown characters to go along with them, and the book chronicles her adventures. Food, New York City, and awesome costumes. Do you see why I like the book? Also, if you want find yourself inexplicably hungry for things like foie gras and octopus ink, this is the book for you. I know I’ve written about the book before, and I probably will again, so brace yourselves. 🙂

Canterbury Tales: (Don’t tell anyone, but I haven’t read this. I know, it’s shocking. But it’s such a beautiful volume, and I thought maybe one of you all has been hankering to read it, or just wants a lovely old hardcover to make your bookshelf pretty.)

So here’s how you can enter. Leave a comment below letting me know which book you’d like to receive. If you want more than one, or want all three, no problem! Just leave a separate comment for each book you want. The winners will be announced January 31st.

If you don’t win but would like to read these, you can buy your own little paperback copies through the links below.

  1. Quite honestly, I just want a new book and dont even care which one. Although i believe that particular copy of Mansfield Park would fit into my book collection exceptionally well.

  2. Canterbury Tales? Didn’t that used to live on my shelf? I remember buying a whole box of books with that cover just because of the covers, then passing on most of them. And I already borrowed your Garlic and Sapphires. I must vote for Mansfield Park. You’re the one who gets me hooked on classical literature.

  3. A book giveaway; what fun! I’m putting my name in for all three I would love to add Canterbury Tales to my collection… what a beaut!!!

  4. Garlic & Sapphires sounds very intriguing but, who am I kidding, I’m back to mostly reading textbooks. I’m adding that to my very long list of future reads!

  5. Garlic and Sapphires is one for me! I’d very much like it! My friend has often talked about it and told me to read it.

  6. I’ve never read Jane Austin. I know. I always assumed the stories would bore me. I’m maybe mature enough to read Mansfield Park and enjoy it by now.

    1. It took me a long time to get started with her too, and her books do take a bit to get into. But once you discover her subtle wit, they’re pretty good.

  7. So I just read Mansfield park all the way through for the first time and I loved it, unlike the movie. I would love to have it on my shelf. But man, I am on a reading streak so I could happily scarf up the other two as well. I would so much rather read books that come recommended than to read 3 trash books for every good one I find in my own search.

  8. I Love reading and don’t have any of these books. Mansfield Park is one of Jane Austen’s that I haven’t read. Btw, I wish I had a friend handing books for me to read.

  9. So I hate to admit this but I haven’t gotten on the whole Jane Austin train… i’d love to give Mansfield Park a chance though!

  10. Garlic and Sapphires. The name itself brings visions of starchy, comforting foods such as spaghetti, buttery garlic toast, creamy fettuccine, fluffy browned to perfection breadsticks….

  11. And for me since I get a crazy high out of having delightful old volumes on my shelf just from the sheer joy of owning them, I’m entering for the Canterbury Tales.
