When I lived in Illinois, my roommates and I split our expenses via a very high tech little tattered notebook full of scribbles. It worked alright, but my brain didn\u2019t love the extra math workout each time we tried to balance what we owed each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Lyn and I moved in together, we upgraded to a slightly higher form of expense splitting, and I can\u2019t stop recommending it to people. <\/span><\/p>\n

The app is called Splitwise, and it\u2019s free on the app store.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can use it for a trip, or for a roommate situation, or for an event, or anything you need to split expenses multiple ways for, and it works equally well for two people or groups. You add the correct people to a group, and whenever someone pays something, they can upload the expense and Splitwise will tell everyone what they owe. When uploading an expense, you can put in that the other person owes you the full amount, only select people are splitting this expense, different people owe different percentages, or that you owe the whole thing, and Splitwise will just neatly divide all the dollars and cents for you. No head scratching or hair-pulling required!<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are planning a vacation, or if you\u2019re constantly paying other people\u2019s expenses, Splitwise will make your life so much easier. I can hardly imagine my life without it anymore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
